Paddle to Lummi Community Connections Committee PLCCC - Who Are We? Some members of the wider Whatcom County community have formed the “Paddle to Lummi Community Connections Committee” (or PLCCC). The purpose of this committee is to support the Lummi Nation in hosting the Intertribal Canoe Journey this summer. Based on meetings with Lummi Nation representatives working on the Canoe Journey, the PLCCC has set goals in five areas: fundraising, soliciting donations, education, volunteer recruitment, and honoring its tribal neighbors. The first PLCCC goal is to raise $300,000 from local businesses and individuals to offset some of the costs of the Canoe Journey event. The second goal is to solicit needed items for the event, such as paper goods and food, from local businesses. The third goal is to increase awareness in the wider Whatcom County community about the Canoe Journey and its cultural and historical importance. The Committee has already worked with Lummi Nation representatives to plan an event at the Whatcom Museum on July 1st open to the general public. Lummi Tribal members will be presenting information on the historic and cultural significance of the canoe journey. In addition to this event, the PLCCC, working closely with Lummi Nation representatives, plans to further accomplish this goal through informational presentations and talks, communication with local organizations and educational institutions, and various media. Success in the third goal should naturally lead to the fourth goal, which is to assist in the recruitment of volunteers for the Canoe Journey event. Finally, the PLCCC is assisting the Honor Foundation, along with Lummi Nation representatives, to plan an event on July 7 (7/7/07—the day the Journey launches from Canada) from noon to 5 at Boulevard Park to honor the “People of the Land and Waters.” Mayor Tim Douglas, Bellingham City Council members, Whatcom County Council members, and other leaders are interested in participating in an appropriate ceremony that will honor the first inhabitants of this land and celebrate the 2007 Canoe Journey being hosted by the Lummi Nation. The event will include speeches, presentations, entertainment, vendors, and opportunities for interaction between Tribal members and the wider community. The PLCCC contacts are Co-Chairs Beth Brownfield (738-8899, bethbrownf@aol.com) and Kara Black (676-2300, kara@treefrognight.com). Please feel free to contact either of them with feedback, ideas or questions. You are welcome to attend our weekly meetings every Thursday evening at 7 pm in Bellingham. Please call Beth for directions. Charitable contributions to the Paddle to Lummi are tax deductible through the Lummi Nation Service Organization (LNSO), which is a tribally-chartered 501(c)3 non-profit organization. |
